Solar Hot Water Rebates Explained

To help reduce greenhouse gas emissions generous Federal and State Government rebates are available, making the purchase of solar hot water systems very affordable.

Victorians can currently receive thousands of dollars in rebates depending on on the system you are replacing, what system you're upgrading to and where you live. For example, new homes are eligible for a rebate through the Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) scheme. On the other hand, homes older than 12months are eligible for multiple federal and state rebates when replacing existing gas or electric hot water systems. No matter what your situation, EnviroGroup will advise you on the most efficient system, which takes best advantage of the available rebates.

STCs Explained (Small-scale Technology Certificates)

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), previously known as RECs are a kind of carbon credit that are generated upon installation of a Solar Hot Water system. When you are awarded your STCs you have the right to exchange them for a dollar value - much like a share. How much you get for each STC depends on the current STC trading price. STCs are normally traded for a point of sale discount with you installer. ie. the dollar value of the STCs is then simply taken off the total price of the system. This is normally far simpler for the customer as trading STCs can be a very confusing and convoluted process.

VEECs Explained (Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates)

VEECs are similar to STCs but are only awarded to Victorian households as part of a state energy efficiency incentive. VEECs are only awarded to existing households who officially decommission an old gas or electric hot water system. How many VEECs you are allocated depends on what type and size solar hot water system you install. Similar to STCs, VEECs can be sold/traded for cash. Most households sell their VEECs to their installer for the current market rate. So the price of your VEECs effectively come off the end price of the system like a point of sale discount.

Federal Rebate Explained (Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme)

The federal government is currently offering a $1000 rebate for the installation of Solar Hot Water systems. Only existing households are eligible as the rebate aims to encourage the decomissioning of old, inefficient hot water systems. Furthermore, households are only eligable for this rebate if they have not already claimed the federal insulation rebate. Fortunately, Sustainability Victoria will step in and contribute the $1000 if the insulation rebate has been claimed.
