Mandatory Disclosure for Commercial BuildingsAs of 2010, commercial buildings of over 2000m2 are required to disclose and advertise up-to-date energy efficiency ratings. These ratings must be updated every year, be publicly accessible and must also be included in all advertising for the sale, lease or sublease of commercial properties. "Energy use in the commercial building sector accounts for around ten per cent of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions and this figure is rising. Improving the energy efficiency of buildings is one of the quickest and cheapest ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate climate change. That’s why improving energy efficiency in the building sector is a clear priority for Australia’s governments."1 "Disclosing energy efficiency provides everyone with access to consistent and meaningful information about a building’s performance. This makes it easier for companies to buy or rent more energy efficient office space."1 It is reasonable to assume that as a result of mandatory disclosure and the financial burdens of increasing energy prices, green credentials will become progressively more desirable in both the commercial and domestic property market. |
