Sustainable House Day Success

Solar array EnviroGroup Managing DirectorOn 11th September, across Australia, tens of thousands of people visited houses open for the 10th Sustainable House Day.  Amongst those opening their houses for the first time was Mick Harris, the owner of EnviroShop.

“I was overwhelmed when over 250 people walked through my house to hear what we had done and to share their sustainability ideas.” Mr Harris said that most people were amazed by the things they learned. “It seemed nearly everyone was shocked that standby power can amount to between 10-20% of household electricity use. This sparked great interest in the standby killing devices I use in my home.”

“There was especially a lot of interest in my solar pergola, which is a stand-alone solar power system which shades the north side of the house.  Also very popular were my hydro power shower rose (that powers its own light as you shower) and my future switch system which allows me to easily cut phantom electricity when my appliances are on standby by remote control.”

Sustainable House Day is on the second Sunday of September every year and for those who were unable to make it, stories of all the houses can be found at the SHMECO website
